Our tried-and-true method for verifying that you’ve actually found your ancestor--and not someone who happened to have same name or lived a similar location around the same time--is to have what Bob calls “the trifecta” of documents for every ancestor:
1. Birth certificate
2. Marriage certificate
3. Death certificate
Having these three documents will allow you to verify that your dates, locations, and some relationships are correct: the documents will reference each other in some way, as well as list spouses, parents, and some children and locations where your ancestor lived. You can start to get this information by talking to your living relatives, then fact-check this with your research.This will make find other documents--like census records, immigration records, enlistment, obituaries and other news articles that may be about your ancestor— much easier.
